When an application demands both electrical isolation and structural integrity, the G10 insulator is often the first material engineers turn to. As a manufacturer specializing in high-performance laminates—including G11, FR-4, EPGM203, and GPO-3—we’ve seen firsthand that G10 remains the benchmark for electrical insulation across industries ranging from power generation to electronics manufacturing.

So what sets the G10 insulator apart from other materials?


At its simplest, G10 is a thermoset laminate made from woven fiberglass cloth bonded with an epoxy resin system. That combination produces a dense, non-porous sheet that does two things exceptionally well: it blocks current flow, and it holds its shape under mechanical stress. Unlike thermoplastics that may soften with temperature or absorb moisture over time, a properly cured G10 insulator maintains its electrical and mechanical properties even in challenging environments.


From a specification standpoint, G10 insulator is recognized under multiple standards. In North America, it falls under NEMA Grade G-10; internationally, it’s referenced as IEC 60893 EP GC 201, and within military specifications, it appears as MIL-I-24768/2 GEE. These designations aren’t just paperwork—they confirm that the material has been qualified for consistent dielectric performance, mechanical strength, and dimensional stability.


The electrical properties of G10 are what make it a true insulator, not just a structural spacer. Typical dielectric strength exceeds 18 kV/mm, and its relative permittivity remains stable even in high-humidity conditions. That stability is critical for applications like high-voltage terminal boards, bus bar supports, and transformer insulation, where any drift in dielectric properties could compromise safety or performance.


Mechanically, G10 insulator offers compressive and flexural strengths well above 500 MPa in typical grades. This allows it to function as both an insulating barrier and a load-bearing component—for example, in motor slot wedges, phase barriers, or rotor insulation. The material resists creep and maintains tight tolerances under sustained loads, which is why it’s also widely used as reinforcement plates in PCB drilling fixtures and precision test equipment.


One point worth clarifying is the distinction between standard G10 and flame-retardant variants. G10 insulator in its base form is non-brominated and carries no inherent flame rating—typically UL 94 HB. In the market, you’ll occasionally see “G10/FR4” used loosely, but for applications requiring a V-0 rating, we typically guide customers toward a dedicated FR-4 grade. Being specific about the resin system and flame classification upfront avoids compliance issues later.

Machining G10 insulator requires the right approach. The same glass-reinforced structure that gives it strength also makes it abrasive. Standard high-speed steel tooling dulls quickly, and aggressive feed rates can cause edge delamination or micro-cracking. In our facility, we treat G10 with carbide tooling, controlled feeds, and dust extraction—not only to achieve clean, accurate parts but also to preserve the material’s insulation integrity at cut edges.


G10 is commonly available in sheets, rods, and tubes, but its real value emerges in custom-machined components. Whether it’s a high-humidity electrical enclosure, a motor insulation part, a transformer insulation board, or a precision PCB drilling pad, the material adapts well to milling, turning, and surface grinding when processed correctly.


For engineers and procurement teams evaluating insulating materials, the choice often comes down to proven performance. A G10 insulator doesn’t promise novelty—it delivers reliability. When you need a material that combines high dielectric strength, mechanical durability, and moisture resistance in one consistent package, G10 remains the standard that other materials are measured against.
